Global Education Unit Plan (Visual Art):
As part of the TGC program we were challenged to take one of our existing lesson plans in our content area and modify it to include global competencies. I chose to work on a unit on self portraits, which is a common subject that most art teachers teach, and to "globalize" it. This is an example of an Unit plan in Visual Art ("Global" Self Portraits) that I adapted using the Understanding by Design Format recommended by TGC.
Pre and post field study revisions:
This unit was introduced prior to travel, and finalized upon arrival back from Morocco. Post field study, I made some revisions to the week 4 daily lesson plans that I had difficulty with or could not accomplish at that time. Post-travel, we attempted to skype with our host teacher and the classroom in Morocco but had scheduling difficulties due to time zone and class schedules. I would like to attempt this again using skype, perhaps connecting with another art class on a similar project (global portraits) with a classroom that has a timezone and schedule we can coordinate with, and try using epals for collaboration on a specific art project. Pictures of the completed global portraits will be posted to the blog to receive feedback from Moroccan students who are eager to connect with us and share their art. We did put the global portraits on display at our school with project descriptions, but we weren’t able to add the QR codes which have student descriptions. This is something else to try out going forward. Another extension or revision of this project would be to add the “take action” component. Perhaps in coordination with the Moroccan Students, we can brainstorm ways to foster more opportunities in art, as there are no art classes offered in their public schools. Maybe this could take the form of a virtual gallery or maybe try using google sites to make student portfolios and share? I plan to research interactive tools or a shared (visual) platform where students may post their work and receive feedback. In the meantime, the classroom blog and vlogs can serve this purpose.
