Birmingham International Center
“The International Center (TIC) is the nation's oldest cultural education organization. Since 1951, TIC has grown into a resource for international business-education needs, including intercultural training, heritage and arts programming. We are a connection to global opportunity, leadership, and social competency.” Local Libraries of Jefferson County
Check local libraries for globally-themed events, especially the downtown Birmingham Library and Hoover Library, and our local Irondale Public library which often hosts events of interest to the Irondale community. Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
Now a National Monument, BCRI’s mission is to “To enlighten each generation about civil and human rights by exploring our common past and working together in the present to build a better future Birmingham Holocaust Education Center
The mission of the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center (BHEC) is “to educate the people of Alabama about the history of the Holocaust so that new generations will apply the lessons of the Holocaust to the construction of a more just, humane, and tolerant future.” Amy McDonald, Shades Valley History Teacher and SVHS colleague publishes her book Determined to Survive, featuring the story of Max Steinmetz and his holocaust survivor story, and is a Fund for Teachers Fellow. Check out her amazing accomplishments, she is already supporting global education competencies in her classroom!
I also love this quote by Amy: ‘No, it’s not. It is not too hard to try and teach students the difference between right and wrong choices. It is difficult, but it is not too hard to expose young people to the painful realities that evil, darkness, and terror existed (and still exists). It is not too hard to promote tolerance and compassion. It is certainly not too hard to stand before them and say over and over and over that one person CAN make a difference. And finally, it is not too hard to do everything possible to preserve a living memory of the millions who perished.’” YouthServ
YouthServe exists to promote youth volunteerism and leadership while giving youth the tools to make positive impacts in their communities. A good “global” resource for making a difference in our own community, incorporating “take action” global competencies. |
